One day during the years of the Second Spanish Republic she made the decision to leave Gran Tarajal, and she never looked back. She was intent on starting a new life for herself and escaping the arranged marriage imposed on her by her own father. Leaving behind the Canary Islands where she had been raised, she focused on finding a way of making a living for herself on the other side of the Atlantic, in Cuba. Once on board the Rodney Star, she met the Westerling family. Little could she have imagined the extent to which their lives would be forever intertwined. The book narrates the lives of the characters whose world had begun to split into two. New ideologies, social changes, women?s role in society, and the economic crisis paint the back to this story. The book is filled with the spirit and vocabulary of the Canary Islands and is a true reflection of the customs and way of life of the time it depicts.
